Inclusive Learning and Learning Support

Children learn best when they:

• • Feel accepted
  • Enjoy positive relationships with their fellow learners and educators, and
  • are able to be active, visible members of the learning community

Enacting Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, inclusive learning communities do the right thing by learners and communities (tika), with integrity (pono) and with care and sincerity (aroha).

Inclusive education means all children are engaged and achieve through being present, participating, learning, and belonging. It means all learners are welcomed into our school and are supported to play, learn, contribute, and participate in all aspects of life at OrmPS.

Learners who require additional support or targeted interventions are under the direct guidance of our Inclusive Learning Leader. The Inclusive Learning Leader’s responsibilities include identifying specific learner needs, coordinating support, allocating resources, documenting guidelines for staff, and monitoring student progress and effectiveness.

Some of the effective practices that are used at OrmPS include responding to individual needs with specific support interventions, differentiating the curriculum, modifying activities, and providing guidance from Learning Assistants. The Habitat environments are created to minimize barriers and ensure optimal learning opportunities for learners with varied needs. The educators extend opportunities for collaboration by using resources, digital technologies, and a team approach to support learning.

We also involve parents, Learning Coaches, specialist teachers, and specialists in developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs). IEPs are developed with specific goals for learners requiring the highest ongoing levels of specialist support to enable them to attend school, join in, and learn alongside other learners at OrmPS.
